In 1556, Ajmer came under the Mughal Empire after being defeated by Mughal Emperor Akbar. It became the capital of the eponymous Ajmer Subah. The city was particularly favored by the Mughals who often stopped off in pursuit of their religious devotion (pilgrimages) to the dargah of Moinuddin Chishti or 'Urs. The city was used as a military base for campaigns against Rajput rulers and, on many occasions, became the site of celebration when a campaign proved successful.
